G.A.S. Gear for the Journey — Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 17, 2026
Journey Beyond Yourself LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates G.A.S. Gear for the Journey, an iOS backpacking gear-planning app. G.A.S. also stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the app or contact us about it.
1. The short version
G.A.S. keeps your gear lists, loadouts, fit preferences, and trip plans on your device. The app has no user accounts, developer-operated cloud sync, advertising SDKs, or developer-operated analytics. Online place search uses Apple Maps, forecasts use Apple WeatherKit, and elevation lookup uses the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These requests send search text or selected destination coordinates to the relevant service, as explained below. Your gear lists and fit profile are not sent with those requests. We do not sell personal information.
2. Information stored by G.A.S.
Information you enter—such as Locker items, custom gear, ownership, loadouts, checklists, worn-gear and consumable classifications, fit profile including optional age, units, country or currency preferences, display settings, selected trip locations and dates, and food and water plans—is stored locally within the app on your iPhone. Local recovery and recent-changes snapshots may also contain previous app data. We do not receive this stored information unless you choose to share it with us.
The app does not request your device’s current GPS location or access your contacts, photo library, HealthKit records, payment information, or advertising identifier. A destination you type or select can still reveal information about your travel plans; it is sent to the services needed for the features described below.
3. Exports, imports, and backups
CSV export transfers gear lists and loadouts; it is not a complete backup of every app preference. The separate full-backup option includes gear, loadouts, checklists, trip plans, fit profile, and settings. Full backups do not include recent-changes history or live forecasts. The app also keeps limited local recovery/history snapshots, which you can manage in Settings under Advanced / Troubleshooting.
Files leave the app only when you choose a destination through iOS, such as Files, Mail, or AirDrop. We do not receive them unless you deliberately send them to us. Full backups can contain personal fit details and trip destinations, so share them only with people or services you trust. Files saved to iCloud or another destination are handled under that provider’s privacy terms. CSV imports and full-backup restoration have different effects; read the confirmation before replacing data.
The optional diagnostics export is designed to include app/build and storage-health information, not gear names, fit measurements, or trip destinations. Review any file and attachments before sending them to support.
4. Place search, weather, and elevation
Apple Maps: Searching for a destination sends the text you type to Apple’s MapKit service to find matching places. This does not require access to your phone’s current location.
Apple Weather: Requesting a forecast sends the coordinates of the selected destination to Apple WeatherKit. Apple states that WeatherKit location information is used to provide forecasts, is not associated with personally identifiable information, and is not tracked between requests. Forecasts and alerts depend on coverage and may differ from actual conditions. See Apple’s Privacy Policy, WeatherKit information, and Apple Weather data-source attribution.
USGS elevation: Elevation lookup sends the selected destination’s latitude and longitude to the USGS Elevation Point Query Service. Its elevation coverage is for the United States; where no value is available, the app allows manual entry. The request does not include your name, gear list, or fit profile. Like other online services, USGS receives connection information such as an IP address. Its published privacy policy describes collection of technical request/usage information. See USGS Privacy Policies.
These services are operated by third parties under their own privacy practices. G.A.S. does not operate a server that stores your search text or destination requests.
5. External links
Manufacturer, retailer, and other external links open outside G.A.S, generally in Safari. Those third-party sites have their own privacy practices. We do not control their collection or use of information. Some links in the app are affiliate links, which means we may receive a small payment if you make a purchase. This does not influence which gear is recommended or what appears in the default loadouts or Locker tab.
6. Support communications
If you contact us by email or through the support or privacy form on this website, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, message, device and iOS details, screenshots, or attachments. We use it to respond, troubleshoot, improve G.A.S, maintain business records, and protect against abuse.
Website forms are hosted and processed by Pixieset and protected against abuse by Cloudflare Turnstile. These providers may process technical information according to their own policies. See Pixieset’s Privacy Policy and Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.
7. Sharing and sale of information
We do not sell personal information or use it for advertising or profiling. We disclose support information only to service providers that help operate the website and communications, when you direct us to do so, or when required for legal, security, or fraud-prevention reasons.
8. Retention and deletion
Your app data remains on your iPhone until you change or remove it. RESET APP restores defaults while retaining custom gear, ownership, and certain Locker choices. It is not a full erasure. ERASE EVERYTHING removes saved app data, including local recovery and recent-changes snapshots, and restarts onboarding. Read the confirmation and export anything you want to keep before erasing. Recent-changes history can also be cleared separately. Deleting the app removes its local app data; files or device backups saved elsewhere must be managed separately with the service where they are stored.
Support communications are kept only as long as reasonably necessary to respond, troubleshoot, maintain appropriate records, protect the service, or meet legal obligations. You may request deletion of support information by contacting us. We may retain limited information when required by law or needed for security or dispute resolution.
9. Your choices and rights
Because app data stays on your device, we cannot access, correct, or delete it for you. You control it through G.A.S, your exported files, and iOS. Depending on where you live, you may have rights concerning personal information we hold from support communications. Contact us to request access, correction, or deletion. We will verify and respond as required by applicable law.
10. Security
We use reasonable measures to protect information under our control. Your on-device data is also protected by the security of your iPhone and iOS. No storage or transmission method is completely secure, and exported files are protected according to the destination you choose.
11. Children’s privacy
G.A.S is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app. If you believe a child sent personal information through a support channel, contact us so we can address it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when G.A.S features, data practices, or legal requirements change. The revised policy will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
